OLSAT 8 and NNAT3 are different ability assessments. OLSAT samples verbal, nonverbal, and quantitative reasoning. NNAT3 is a nonverbal measure that uses pictorial directions and does not require spoken or written language to solve its items. Both are published by Pearson. The useful preparation choice starts with the exact assessment your school plans to administer.

OLSAT vs NNAT at a glance

Publisher-described differences between OLSAT 8 and NNAT3
Question OLSAT 8 NNAT3
What does it assess? Verbal, nonverbal, and quantitative cognitive abilities related to school learning. General ability through nonverbal tasks.
How is language involved? The scope includes language-based and nonverbal item families; the mix varies by level. Pictorial directions; no spoken or written language is required for the items.
Which formats are available? Paper across K–12; online for Grades 2–12, Levels C–G. Paper and online options.
Who decides which test applies? Your school or district confirms the edition, level, and format. Your school or district confirms the edition, level, and format.

Why the difference matters for practice

If a child is preparing for OLSAT, practicing shapes alone leaves out language-based reasoning. Review the school’s assigned level and include the relevant verbal item families as well as picture or figure work. Our OLSAT format guide links those families to the publisher’s scope chart.

For NNAT, choose resources written for that specific assessment rather than assuming an OLSAT word problem or vocabulary exercise matches its format. Similar-looking diagrams do not establish that two tests have identical directions, rules, difficulty, or scoring.

Two simplified examples of different reasoning demands

A word relationship

Leaf is to tree as petal is to __. Choices: flower, soil, garden, seed.

Answer: flower. A leaf is part of a tree; a petal is part of a flower. This exercise asks the learner to understand words and preserve a part-to-whole relationship. It is an independently written teaching example, not an official OLSAT item.

A figure relationship

Which picture completes the second pair?

A small tree becomes a large tree. A small house becomes what? Choices: A: Large house; B: Small tree; C: Large tree; D: Small house
Choose A, B, C, or D from the pictures.
Show the answer and visual explanation

Answer A: Large house. Only size changes: small tree to large tree. The small house becomes a large house.

Answer diagram highlighting choice A

This independently written visual reasoning example illustrates a pattern habit. It is not an official item from either assessment and does not reproduce a test form.

Is OLSAT harder than NNAT?

A single harder-or-easier ranking is not useful for selecting preparation. The assessments place different demands on the student, and performance on one small practice set cannot predict performance on either official assessment. First confirm the test, then look at which directions and relationships are unfamiliar to your child.

Can an OLSAT score be converted into an NNAT score?

Do not convert a practice percentage or one test’s reported score into another test’s score. Ask the school to explain the named score, comparison group, and decision rules on the actual report. Our OLSAT score guide explains why raw scores, percentiles, and standardized scores should be kept separate.

Questions to ask when a school mentions both tests

  • Which assessment and edition will my child take this school year?
  • Which level and format have been assigned?
  • Are both assessments used, and if so, how does each contribute to the decision?
  • What directions, accommodations, or familiarization materials does the school provide?
  • Where can I read the current written eligibility and review policy?

Use the school question checklist. Avoid applying an old rule from another district to your child’s current program.

Start with the right OLSAT level

If your school confirms OLSAT 8, use the A–G level chart, explore practice by grade, and try the free OLSAT practice test. The short sessions are for learning and familiarization; they do not generate an official score.
