Four or more recognizable pictures are compared. The child identifies the one that does not share a useful category with the others. The rule might be what an object is, where it belongs, or what it is used for. Pearson places this item family at OLSAT 8 Levels A–C in its scope chart. That chart describes available item types, not a guarantee about one student’s form.

How to solve picture classification questions

Ask the child to name every picture first. Then ask which three could go together and why. A correct category must explain all of the matching pictures, not only two.

What can go wrong?

Choosing by color or size before recognizing the objects can hide the more useful category. After checking an answer, ask the student to describe why each distractor does not follow the rule. This makes the lesson about reasoning rather than memorizing a picture.

Practice this skill at the right level

Try a few illustrated examples before a mixed session. Younger students may need an adult to read directions aloud.
