What is OLSAT?
OLSAT stands for Otis–Lennon School Ability Test. It asks students to reason with words, pictures, shapes, and numbers. Schools may use results alongside other information to understand learning needs. It uses multiple-choice questions and has levels for Kindergarten through Grade 12. Formats and question types vary by level.
Five kinds of thinking to explore
- Verbal comprehension: Understand words and follow directions. Choose the small red circle: A is a large red circle, B is a small red circle, and C is a small blue circle. Answer: B matches both “small” and “red.”
- Verbal reasoning: Find relationships between ideas. Bird is to nest as bee is to: A hive, B pond, or C cave. Answer: A — a hive is a bee’s home, just as a nest is a bird’s home.
- Pictorial reasoning: Spot how pictures belong together. Which does not belong: A apple, B banana, or C sneaker? Answer: C — the sneaker is not a fruit.
- Figural reasoning: Find rules in shapes and patterns. Circle, triangle, circle, triangle — what comes next: A circle, B square, or C triangle? Answer: A continues the alternating pattern.
- Quantitative reasoning: Explore number relationships. 2, 4, 6, 8 — what comes next: A 9, B 10, or C 12? Answer: B — add 2 each time.
These are independently created learning examples, not official test questions or a prediction of an official score.
What to expect
Listen to directions and try sample items. Choose one answer for each puzzle. Your school confirms the level, format, and timing.
Get ready, gently
Try a few playful puzzles. Explain how you found the answer. Sleep well and eat as usual. Stay calm and do your best. One test never tells your whole story!
Parents: Ask how results are used, what scores mean, and what support is available.
