What to focus on

A seventh grader can practice checking whether a rule holds across the full sequence and spotting an exception.

Try an original example

Try a figural relationship

Which relationship is unlike the others?

Which relationship is unlike the others? Choices: A: Pentagon → hexagon; B: Triangle → square; C: Square → pentagon; D: Hexagon → octagon
Choose A, B, C, or D from the pictures.
Show the answer and visual explanation

Answer D: Hexagon → octagon. The first three gain one side. Hexagon to octagon gains two.

Reasoning skills for this grade

The typical OLSAT 8 match is Level F. Pearson’s scope chart lists multi-step figure transformations and number relationships for this stage. The exact form and delivery are chosen by the school.

Grade 7 commonly uses the same level as Grades 6 and 8. Practice checking an explanation against all the evidence. A useful review question is: which tempting option fits part of the problem but breaks another condition?

Sample 1: Number series

Complete the series: 2, 6, 12, 20, 30, __.

A. 36   B. 40   C. 42   D. 44

Answer: C. 42. The differences are 4, 6, 8, and 10. The next difference is 12, giving 42. Equivalently, the terms are 1 × 2, 2 × 3, 3 × 4, and so on.

Sample 2: Verbal analogy

Author is to novel as composer is to __.

A. Orchestra   B. Symphony   C. Conductor   D. Stage

Answer: B. Symphony. The relationship is creator to created work. A composer writes a symphony, just as an author writes a novel.

Sample 3: Inference

Every member of the chess club attends practice on Tuesday. Priya is a member of the chess club. What must be true?

A. Priya attends practice on Tuesday   B. Priya wins every match   C. Only chess-club members attend on Tuesday

Answer: A. Priya attends practice on Tuesday. The two given statements establish that Priya attends Tuesday practice. They say nothing about winning or whether other people attend.

What to do after these examples

Ask the student to explain one answer without looking at the key. If a direction or relationship was unfamiliar, visit the OLSAT question-type lessons and return to that skill. Then try the free Level F practice test for ten original questions with explanations.

Review mistakes as clues about what to practice next. A percentage on this small set is not an official OLSAT score. See how OLSAT scores are reported and use the two-week preparation plan to organize short sessions.

Common mistakes to discuss together

  • Starting before understanding the directions: describe what the question asks before choosing.
  • Checking only part of a pattern: test the rule against every picture or relationship shown.
  • Remembering an answer instead of the reasoning: ask how the rule would work with a new example.

A short preparation plan

Work through a few varied items, then review the reasoning rather than counting correct answers alone.

  1. Ask the school which level, form, and administration method it will use.
  2. Start with untimed examples and discuss the reasoning step.
  3. Try the free Level F practice session when directions feel familiar.
  4. Review explanations and finish with a calm routine.

Ask the school

Will directions be read aloud? Is testing on paper or online? How will results be considered for the student? The answer depends on the local school plan.
